Continuing my week of lunchtime posts, today's piece is the enigmatic third movement of Catherine Kontz's Voyage with Don Quixote, entitled The English Channel. Though the suite draws inspiration from Thomas Mann's diary of the same name written in the 1930s, this movement's now somewhat loaded title feels poignantly of-this-moment. The English Channel is scored free of bar lines with a '1cm = c. 1 sec' direction at the top. I loved the freedom and discretion this allowed me as a performer. Each note felt absolutely precious and meant.
The window in the film is one I often looked out of during this most recent lockdown.
